In 1980, having just returned from a year in Britain, I was already a huge Chrissie Hynde and Pretenders fan.
My brother was also and we found out they were playing at Uncle sam's Bar in Buffalo, New York. Thats about an
hour's drive from where we lived in Welland, Ontario. We set out to go one cold January night, without having bought
any advance tickets...the Pretenders weren't that big here yet and we figured we'd have no trouble getting in.
We figured wrong. When we got there, the gig was sold out. So we decided that we'd just hang outside the front
doors and try to hear what we could through the walls. After a bit, a limo pulled up in front of the bar and who
should get out, but Chrissie herself. She glanced up at my brother and me and I managed to say, "Hey Chrissie,
we drove all the way from Canada to see you, but there's no more tickets!" She looked at me and smiled and
said "Thats too bad." and proceeded to go inside. Oh well, I figured. A few minutes later, a bouncer
came out to my brother and me and said, "Miss Hynde would like you to come in" and he brought us to a
table in the front of the bar. We couldn't believe it! During the show (which was fantastic!!!) I managed to catch
Chrissie's eye and give her a gesture of thanks. She just smiled at me and I have been a die-hard fan ever since.
I saw her again at the Phoenix in Toronto during the "Rock this Club" tour in 1994 and was right up front
and she still rocks like nobody's business!!
